Sometimes the sarcasm comes through loud and clear
« on: February 22, 2011, 09:50:45 am »
People often say it can be hard to detect joking or sarcasm online in posts, which I do agree with.

The thread on the Trion forums about how they still haven't given us the download and server info for headstart had a comment though that I think the sarcasm was clear as day (and made me laugh so loud my boss came over to see what the hubub was about and she laughed too!).

So true. It goes back to the very beginning of who we are, underneath the civilized skin. There's a tickle in the brain when the group takes off in a direction. It says "Run with the pack!" when the pack runs. Those survival instincts... the last things to die.

I was thinking of that as I watched 3/4 of our beta folks jump off that cliff. Sad thing is, I had to jump to go down and rez folks, lol, since I saw a scattering of corpses on the beach. Thank goodness we're immortal! Who loves soul walk? I do!

Yep, you beat me to rezzes on a couple by mere miliseconds!!!!

It's just funny how someone says "lets jump off" and everyone is like lemmings.....over the cliff......

When you know you aren't really going to die then it's a lot easier to take that leap.  IRL there is no way in hell I would jump.   ;D

There are lemmings, and then there are guild mates.   The difference is lemmings don't know any better and your guild mates are there to support you (Glorious death before ignoble dishonor!)

I chose not to take the plunge.  Someone had to go around and search wallets -- I mean, mourn the dead.  Yeah, that's it!

On the original point about sarcasm, the writer did a great job making it plain that it was sarcasm.  That can be tricky when posting a short sentence or two.  For my part, I've been trying (with varying degrees of success) to avoid sarcasm.  Sarcastic remarks are potentially confusing, and tend to be hurtful.  There's a mean-spirited edge to statements that criticize someone in the form of a complement.  How many "Grats devs" posts have you seen in the past (maybe not on Rift forums) that actually were congratulating the dev team?

I remember in Vanguard, when I had grouped with a stranger because we were working on the same quest.  After a particularly tricky part that we almost didn't pull off, but managed to be victorious at the end, I typed in "Good job".  He got all defensive, so I had to explain that what I meant by that was:  "Good job."

i jumped.

i wasn't expecting to be snowed-in yesterday, and assumed the photo was going to be the last thing my beta toon was ever going to do...so, why not go out in a blaze of glory or at least with a cloud of musical notes floating over my head as the blood spatter paints the cliff?
